Each month, Makers Empire runs an in-app 3D design competition for students to test their Design Thinking skills against their peers all over the world. Competitions can attract up to 24,000 entries and they’re a great way to engage students in Design Thinking and 3D design.
For our August competition, students needed to create a new Marmaduke mascot using Makers Empire to honour a historic flight. In 1919, SA brothers Sir Ross and Sir Keith Smith flew the first ever aeroplane from England to Australia. The Smith brothers, with their mechanics Wally Shiers (SA) and James Bennett (Vic), made the pioneering 28-day journey in a Vickers Vimy biplane of spruce wood lined with lacquered fabric, with open cockpits and little more than a compass and maps for navigation.
To help celebrate the centenary of this historic flight, Makers Empire partnered with the History Trust of SA for our August competition:
We enjoyed seeing the thousands of great Marmaduke mascot designs honouring this historic flight from students all over the world. It was great to see how creative the designs were, and how many students were inspired by the aviation theme.
We’re happy to announce that Taye from Henley Beach Primary School was the winner of the competition with his Peter the Pilot design. (Click the link to see a rotating 3D model).
Thanks to the Royal Australian Air Force, Taye’s winning Peter the Pilot mascot is off on an epic mission to the Middle East aboard a C-17A Globemaster III strategic transport plane. Taye and his family were also invited to the RAAF Base Edinburgh Air Show last weekend to meet a crew from No. 36 Squadron RAAF and tour a C-17.
