Students Making Roads Safer with the Street Smart Primary Road Safety Program

RAA, the Lifetime Support Authority (LSA) and Makers Empire recently joined forces to deliver a pioneering program designed to promote awareness of road safety and empower students as problem solvers. The Street Smart Primary Road Safety program was delivered to 10 metropolitan and regional SA schools in terms 2-3.

The Street Smart program was designed to increase awareness of pedestrian, passenger and wheeled safety, introduce students to road-safety skills and the role that RAA work plays in our everyday lives to help community stay safe on the road, and empower students as problem solvers in addressing important community issues.

The participating schools were Hawthorndene Primary School, Sunrise Christian School – Morphett Vale, Northfield Primary School, Nailsworth Primary School, Modbury School P-6, Ardtornish Primary School, Walkerville Primary School, Fraser Park Primary School, St Joseph’s School Murray Bridge, and Jervois Primary School.

The program began with professional development for teachers led by the Makers Empire learning team. Then students worked through the Street Smart challenge course delivered within the Makers Empire 3D design app with guidance from their teachers and identified and solved real-life problems related to road safety. Students then used provided 3D printers to print their designs so they could prototype and test them.

The schools then got together for two student showcase events to share and celebrate their learning.

Street Smart Metropolitan Showcase at Sfera's

Makers Empire: RAA Street Smart Showcase at Sfera’s by Shayla from Modbury School

On Friday, September 13th when the bell rang to start school, we went to the STEM area. We got into our presentation groups and practised our presentations. Soon it was time to walk to Sfera’s and when we crossed the main road we had to look both ways for cars and only cross the road when it was clear and safe.

When we got to Sfera’s we found our area and were given our 3D models in a box, so we set them up on our table. After all of the Modbury school tables were set up a song was played to tell us it was time to start the Showcase. Firstly, students from Walkerville Primary School shared a video of the Acknowledgement of Country that their school had made and it was good. The other schools also at the Showcase were Nailsworth Primary, Ardtornish Primary, Northfield Primary and Walkerville Primary. Modbury School had four tables of students presenting. After a bit more talking by Mandi from Makers Empire, it was time to go back to our presentation tables.

We talked to other kids and adults about what street safety problem we had worked on, and the solution we came up with and explained how our 3D model would solve the problem. Students from Rooms 11 and 12 visited the Showcase and listened to us present and the other schools. It was great to have them visit with Mrs Curtis, Mrs Favell and Mr Green.

Everyone was able to walk around the room and visit the other schools to see their ideas and models. We all were given 3 tickets and as we walked around the showcase and spoke to other students about their models we gave the tickets to the groups that we liked the best. We also had a passport and if we asked a group a question about their model then they gave us a stamp on our passport. If we got 3 rows stamped we got a sheet of stickers to take home. I got stickers to take home.

My group had photos taken and it was a fun way to share our learning with others. My Mum came to see me and so did some other parents and I loved talking about our project and explaining our model to lots of people.

Our school won the Peer Award because Modbury Group 2 got the most tickets for their presentation. You can see the special award in the office trophy cabinet, it is pink and purple. Congratulations to Nailsworth Primary School who won the Industry Prize.

After the awards were given out we had lunch together. We got sandwiches, a drink and a cookie. After lunch, we packed up and then walked back to school and we were all very happy. Mrs Slater took a photo of us all and also Group 2 that had won the award. It was a great day!

THANK YOU RAA, SFERAS AND MAKERS EMPIRE.
